Animal Crossing Recipe: Potato Curry

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a game playable on Nintendo Switch. Animal Crossing is one of my favorite franchises and I grew up playing it on my cousin’s GameCube. One of the exciting updates in ACNH was that not only could we purchase and eat familiar meals that looked delicious, but we could make them.

ACNH Potato Curry ingredients in the game:

  • 3 flour 3 potato

Yep, that’s it…If you’re looking for more details on this in-game recipe or dish, check out details on the Nookipedia page.

The recipes for most meals are too simple in my opinion. So, if you want to make a dish yourself but can’t find a recipe online, you’ve gotta get creative!

Potato Curry Recipe

4 servings, cooking time: 30 min

I haven’t found my “ultimate” curry recipe yet so I pulled one from Tasty, created by Gwenaelle Le Cochennec as inspiration. Although I didn’t need to add chickpeas as this recipe does, I did just because I wanted it. For the sake of these ACNH potato curry instructions, I took it out of the ingredient list below.

If you decide to add them, just make sure you rinse them first. For next time, my fiance would like to add another potato. The 2lbs recommended for this recipe was 2 potatoes, so if you want more you can add a third.

Something to note about curry is that you can really customize it to your own liking and dietary needs by supplementing ingredients that will still work in curry dishes.

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 2 lb potato, peeled and cubed

  • 1 cup vegetable broth

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 14 oz diced tomato, 1 can

  • 14 oz coconut milk, 1 can

  • 1/2 T melted butter

  • Basmati rice, cooked, for serving

  • naan bread, for serving

  • fresh cilantro, chopped, for garnish

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced

  • 4 and 1/2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 4 teaspoons curry powder

  • 1 ½ teaspoons paprika

  • 1 teaspoon cayenne

  • 2 teaspoons cumin powder

  • ½ teaspoon allspice

  • 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, minced

*Before starting the curry, make sure to give yourself enough time to wash and cook your rice. We use a crockpot with a rice setting so it usually takes about 20 minutes.

Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat until shimmering. Add the onion and saute for about 3 minutes, until translucent.

Add the 4 cloves of garlic and saute for about 2 minutes, until fragrant.

Add the curry powder, paprika, cayenne, cumin, allspice, ginger, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook for about 2 minutes until the spices are fragrant.

Add the potatoes and mix well until well-coated in spices.

(If you’re following the Tasty recipe I linked earlier. you would add the chickpeas after the potatoes are mixed in well.)

Add the broth, lemon juice, and tomatoes and stir, then pour in the coconut milk and stir to combine.

Increase the heat to high and bring the mixture to a simmer. Once bubbling, reduce the heat to medium and cook for 15-20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and easily pierced with a fork.

This is the part that is common for people to struggle to get the consistency they want for their sauce.

After the recommended time, the curry wasn’t thick enough to where it should’ve been. There are many ways to thicken a curry sauce such as Flour, cornstarch, yogurt, tomato paste, ground nuts or peanut butter, or roux.

Due to my limited ingredients at the time, I used flour. For other curry recipes, I liked using greek yogurt. To each their own!

Keep in mind that if you need to add ingredients to thicken the sauce, you may also need to add a tad more salt. Taste as you go and decide which seasonings you’d like to bring back in.

Before your curry is done, you can prepare your naan bread (if bought from the store pre-made).

Combine 1/2 T melted butter and the remaining 1/2 garlic clove then brush onto the bread. I have an air fryer so I toast mine for 10 minutes. Each device is different so use a time you think is best. I like the bread to still feel soft, just toasted on the outside.

And here we are! My Animal Crossing New Horizons potato curry. I displayed it in its tiny cup, but where’s the rice??

See below for my actual full meal, with chickpeas and rice included on the plate.

What Are Your Thoughts?

Have you tried making curry before? I’d love to exchange recipes here or hear your (kind) critiques of this dish.

In the future, I might even do a “revisited” article or update this one with my developed personal recipe. Everyone makes their curry a bit differently which I think is so fun!
